User Research

This platform offers word class lectures and courses for medical professionals in a variety of specialties, but the online experience was presenting barriers to learners.

Doctors were having difficulty searching for courses and identifying videos they had already watched. Many did not even know what features the product had to offer.

Due to their frustration, Doctors were cancelling subscriptions. We strategized as a team to come up with a series of new features, as well as feature improvements, that would make this platform as special as its video content.

Competitive Landscape

After conducting user research, I spent time looking at existing products on the market that excelled in online learning. This research helped me identify core online learning feature sets users had come to expect, including curated course lists based on interests, the ability to ‘follow topics’, and the ability to take notes/read transcripts.

Product Updates

CME Credits.

One of the main selling points of the product’s subscription plan is the ability to complete CMEs. I designed the CMEs to have their own tab where you could set a goal, and also pulled CME statistics into the top right header to keep users aware of their goal and status.

Following.

Doctors told us they were looking for content from specific institutions and specialists, which led us to implement a ‘Follow’ button. We enabled user to follow specific Doctors, institutions, and courses. This button also allowed us to notify users of new content added to the site.

Personalization.

Following e-learning and streaming service best practices, I redesigned the home page to showcase new content at the top, and highlight videos that were previously watched to help Doctors pick up where they left off.

Account.

I redesigned the account page to feel like a dashboard for the user. There are controls they can turn on and off, and information is presented so they do not have to search to find where to upgrade their subscription plan.

New Video Features

CME Credits.

If the course offers CME credits, the video will have a green badge and note how many credits are offered. In the right vertical tab, Doctors can take the exam on the video screen.

Notes.

Doctors can take notes while watching videos and save their timestamp for future use. This feature was requested by multiple users who were using this product to further their education.

Doctors also requested transcripts of the videos to help them recall certain terms or parts of the videos.
